Oyama Magnolia, Korean Mountain Magnolia, Siebold's Magnolia
A classic beauty, Magnolia sieboldii (Oyama Magnolia) is a vase-shaped, deciduous shrub or small tree boasting splendid flowers in late spring to early summer and sporadically throughout the rest of the summer. Emerging from egg-shaped buds, nodding or pendent, cup-shaped fragrant white flowers, 4 in. across (10 cm), with prominent crimson stamens, can be admired. They are followed by showy, pink oval fruits, 3 in. long (7 cm), which split open in the fall to reveal orange to red seeds. The foliage of broad elliptic green leaves, 3-6 in. long (7-15 cm), turns golden yellow in fall. Oyama Magnolia grows as an understory tree or large shrub in the wild. Small-statured, with no serious disease or insect problems, this Magnolia is a good choice for small gardens where it will make a charming statement growing as a central feature.
Magnolia belongs to the Magnoliaceae family, which includes several popular species such as the Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora), Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata), Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana), and Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana).
