Southwestern White Pine, Mexican White Pine, Chihuahua White Pine
Pinus strobiformis (Southwestern White Pine) is a tall evergreen coniferous tree of pyramidal habit with a slender, straight trunk and an open crown becoming rounded to irregular with age. The soft, straight to slightly twisted, finely serrated, rich blue-green needles, up to 4 in. long (10 cm), are presented in bundles of five and persist for three to five years. The thick-scaled, egg-shaped, pendant seed cones, 10 in. long (25 cm), are creamy brown to light yellow-brown. Its large seeds are consumed by wildlife and were eaten by southwestern Native Americans. The bark is smooth and silvery gray on young trees, becoming dark gray-brown, furrowed and divided into rough rectangular plates on mature specimens.
