Iris cristata (Dwarf Crested Iris)

Iris cristata (Dwarf Crested Iris) is a low-growing perennial forming a quickly spreading mat of narrow, sword-shaped, bright green, pointed leaves. Myriads of small, light violet-blue flowers, up to 1.5 in. across (4 cm), adorned with a conspicuous white splotch and gold crest on each fall, appear in mid-spring, just above the foliage tips in perfect display. They carpet the ground and create a spectacular drift of blue color. This rhizomatous perennial is an excellent plant for the shaded rock garden, perennial border, or woodland garden. May also be used as a seasonal ground cover.

• Grows up to 6-9 in. tall (15-22 cm) and 6-12 in. wide (15-30 cm). Spreads quickly to form dense colonies in satisfactory growing conditions.
• Performs best in light shade in moist, humus-rich soils. Plants will tolerate some sun if the soil is consistently moist. Blooms well even in dry shade.
• A welcomed addition to beds and borders, wall-side borders, coastal gardens, city gardens, cottage gardens, rock gardens, or containers.
• Deer resistant.
• No serious insect or disease issues but watch for slugs and snails.
• Remove any dying foliage in autumn, old flower stems can be cut down after flowering.
• Propagate by division of rhizomes from midsummer to early autumn
• All parts may cause discomfort if ingested. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
• Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
• Native to the southeastern United States.
