Streambank Wild Hollyhock, Wild Hollyhock, Mountain Globemallow
Iliamna rivularis (Wild Hollyhock) is a perennial wildflower boasting showy terminal racemes of pink, rose-purple or nearly white flowers, 2-3 in. wide (5-7 cm), over a long season. Blooming in early to late summer, they are borne from the upper leaf axils on stout stalks. The foliage of large leaves is broadly heart-shaped with triangular lobes. Wild Hollyhock reproduces by seed and is not rhizomatous. The seeds have a smooth, hard coat and require a heat treatment for germination. They remain viable for at least a few hundred years! Wild Hollyhock occurs on mesic sites in deep, moist, but well-drained soil. It commonly grows on forested slopes, in meadows, along streambanks, and in disturbed areas. It flowers profusely after a disturbance such as a wildfire but is quickly replaced by other vegetation. Wild Hollyhock can be used in beds and borders as well as informal sites such as prairies and meadows.
