Why Create this Garden?

This design is perfect for areas with partial sunlight, offering vibrant color and texture without the need for full sun. Its native plants require minimal maintenance, conserve water, and attract beneficial pollinators, all while enhancing the beauty of your yard.

Key Plants and Their Roles

Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa)

Plant Type: Herbaceous Perennial
Native Habitat: Most North American States
Role in Garden: Butterfly Weed is one of the few North American native perennials with orange flowers. Its deep green leaves, short stature, and interesting seed pods lend interest throughout the season. As a milkweed, this is one of the only hosts for monarch butterflies and will give their caterpillars something on which to feed.

Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum)

Plant Type: Herbaceous Perennial
Native Habitat: Midwestern, Southeastern and East Coast states
Role in Garden: This woodland species is an easily grown spring bloomer. It features large, lobed leaves that send up pink-purple flowers on delicate stems. Dark strips on the petals tell insects where to go to get nectar and pollen.

Sweet Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum)

Plant Type: Herbaceous Perennial
Native Habitat: Midwestern, Southeastern and East Coast states
Role in Garden: Sweet Joe Pye Weed is a tall plant that’s at home in the shade, unlike other Joe Pye species. It can reach heights of 7 feet and is topped with large, vanilla-scented flower clusters in late summer.

Planting Tips

Sunlight: This garden will thrive in a space that receives partial sunlight, or 3-6 hours per day
Soil Moisture: These plants prefer medium soil moisture
Maintenance: Minimal care is needed for native plants. Water every day after planting plugs for one month to ensure strong root development. Prune as needed to deadhead spent flowers and encourage strong growth.
