Providing delicate shade in this desert garden, Parkinsonia praecox (Palo Brea) is a wonderful tree for large, open desert gardens where its architectural qualities can be admired: smooth pale green bark, gracefully twisting branches, vast numbers of lemon-yellow flowers in spring when it creates a dramatic display.
Palo Brea is combined with the ravishing blue-green rosettes of Dioon edule (Chestnut Dioon), an elegant, palm-like, evergreen cycad. They are both underplanted with a carpet of Dyckia ‘Burgundy Ice’, a small succulent with striking rosettes of gracefully curving, burgundy leaves adorned with brilliant white spines.
Tolerant of extreme heat and cold, all these plants are low-care, water-wise, drought tolerant, and they look great year-round.
