Mountain Camellia, Mountain Stewartia, Malachodendron pentagynum, Stewartia pentagyna
Stewartia ovata (Mountain Camellia) is a large deciduous shrub or small tree with strongly ascending branches and a dense foliage of ovate, dark green leaves, 5-6 in. long (12-15 cm). Large saucer-shaped white flowers, 3 in. wide (8 cm), adorned with showy purple stamens and orange anthers, appear in mid-summer. Resembling camellias, they give way to small, woody, egg-shaped capsules containing lustrous brown seeds. The foliage turns brilliant shades of orange scarlet in the fall. The shedding of leaves exposes the mottled and exfoliating cinnamon-colored bark, adding winter interest. Slow-growing, Mountain Camellia has a name for being difficult to cultivate. It makes, however, an excellent accent or specimen plant.
