Dusty Miller, Jacobaea maritima (syn. Senecio cineraria), is grown for its unforgettable foliage. This bushy perennial or subshrub is often used as an annual, valued for silvery, finely dissected leaves that can look almost lace like. A layer of fine, matted hairs gives the foliage a felted, silver to white sheen that stays attractive all season. In year two it may send up clustered, daisy like blooms in cream to yellow. They are modest, and many gardeners pinch them so the foliage remains the star. Glowing at dusk and under moonlight, this versatile foliage plant softens strong color contrasts and tones down hot palettes. Use it as a container accent, edging, border ribbon, or a foil for darker flowers and leaves.
