Picturesque and reliable, Aristolochia macrophylla (Dutchman’s Pipe) is a vigorous deciduous climber with large, heart-shaped leaves, up to 12 in. long (30 cm), deep green above and pale-silver beneath. Carried in a shingle-like pattern, they overlap to create a dense cloak on a trellis, arbor, fence or wall. In late spring to early summer, unusual pipe-shaped flowers dangle down from the leaf axils. Borne singly or in clusters of 2-3 flowers, the greenish-yellow blossoms are mottled with yellow and burgundy. They are often obscured by the lush foliage. However, this twining woody vine is appreciated more for its foliage than its flowers. Rich in nectar, the flowers attract hummingbirds. Dutchman’s Pipe is also the main plant food for pipe vine swallowtail butterflies. The flowers are followed by green cucumber-like capsules, 3-4 in. long (7-10 cm), eventually ripening to gray or black. An old-fashioned favorite, Dutchman’s Pipe quickly creates a dense tangle of beautiful heart-shaped leaves and makes a wonderful screen or climber for the porch or garden wall.
