London Pride, None-So-Pretty, St. Patrick's Cabbage, Whimsey, Prattling Parnell, Look Up and Kiss Me
Award-winning Saxifraga x urbium (London Pride) is an evergreen perennial forming a dense, spreading carpet of rosettes of spoon-shaped, long-stalked leaves with scalloped margins. In late spring to early summer, a profusion of pink-flushed white flowers borne in airy panicles, rise on 12 in. (30 cm) stems above the foliage and create a ravishing display. Tough and easy in a wide variety of conditions, Saxifraga x urbium is undemanding, versatile, and adds year-round interest in the shade garden. This hybrid between S. spathularis and S. umbrosa is particularly useful as a shade-tolerant ground cover, quickly making large colonies after a few years.
