Peppermint Spider Lily, Peppermint Surprise Lily
One of the most cold-hardy varieties of spider lilies, Lycoris incarnata (Peppermint Spider Lily) is a bulbous perennial boasting a dense display of large, white flowers, 3 in. across (7 cm), adorned with a pink stripe running lengthwise down the center of each petal. Held in umbels of 6 to 8 flowers, they open in succession from striped buds – an umbel in full display is a pretty sight. Emerging in spring, the foliage of narrow, strap-shaped, green leaves remains fresh-looking until it dies out in mid-summer when the pretty candy-striped blossoms emerge atop a leafless flower stalk. Unlike many Lycoris species, Peppermint Spider Lily is reported to require a hot, dry resting period to flower well. It is a lovely flowering bulb, adding a welcome spot of color when many plants are preparing to go dormant. It is perfect for the vase, too.
