Abies concolor ‘Candicans’ (White Fir)

Regarded as the bluest of all conifers, Abies concolor ‘Candicans’ is a magnificent large evergreen conifer. Forming a dense pyramid when young, it matures to a columnar, highly symmetrical shape with handsome layered branches smothered by long, silvery-blue needles. Striking, pale green cones adorned with a deep purplish cast, appear upright on the branches. This slow-growing conifer adds about 12 in. of new growth per year (30 cm) and will measure about 10 ft. (3 m) after 10 years. A very appealing addition for large landscapes where it can be allowed to grow to its full magnificence.

• Grows up to 30 ft. high (9 m) and 15 ft. wide (4.5 m).
• Performs best in full sun or part shade in rich, slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Best performance occurs in full sun in moist, sandy-loam, rich soils that are well-drained, but it is somewhat adaptable to poor soils, compacted soils, heat, and drought.
• Virtually disease free. Watch for aphids and adelgids. Easy to grow, easy to care for and rarely browsed by deer.
• No pruning required.
• Native from Oregon to New Mexico.
